Technically, you don't. Poser has no practical modeling functions; it's merely a character studio/animation package. Models must be created with the aid of other software (Blender, Maya, etc.), after which they can be imported into Poser and rigged.

Sure. Poser can import .3ds files, though for best results Wavefront .obj is preferred.

If you're going to use 3DS Max, I'd recommend downloading the Habware .obj plugin. It should make working alongside Poser easier.
